Blue Stars
Cape Town, South Africa is the most amazing place to be when spring arrives. The flowers grow thick on the side of just about every road you travel on in and around the city. These flowers belong to a small thin type of a not-so-plentiful bush that I am sure doesn't grow higher than 20cm (7.9 in). The flowers are approximately 2 – 2 ½ cm (0.8 - 1 in) in size. Picture size 50cm x 69.4cm (19.7 - 27.3 in).

Family: Strelitziaceae Strelitzia reginae
Common Names: Crane flower, Bird of Paradise Flower or Geel Piesang (Yellow Banana)
I have decided to include this flower we found while walking through Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (Their website run by SANBI). The colours are so beautiful and when it comes to Strelitzias my daughter has a soft spot! Majestic and strong are words I think best describe the overall look of these plans. True to form the flowers definitely makes a statement when you look at them. The leaves feel smooth and strong while the plant has a bit of a cactus-type look to it. I could certainly feel the strength of the plant when I touched one of the stems. They have brilliant orange and bright blue as their colours but there is a surprising exception. Read more about Mandela's Gold, which was in the beginning carefully hand-pollinated to create a beautiful clear yellow colour with purple. Strelitzias are grown and used as cut flowers across the world however they are indigenous to South Africa and grows wild in the Eastern Cape. Eastern Cape is not Western Cape you might wish to tell me. You are right, but I did mention Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, so I am sure you will forgive me my indulgence. Want to know something special or more about these flowers? Go HERE and HERE. Things like how to squirrels, birds and a lot more! Size 69.4 x 41.6cm (27.3 x 16.4in)
